The article was prepared for the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. It is devoted to the generalization of the experience of sociological research into the peculiarities of work, lifestyle and psychological state of liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, which was carried out by the staff of the Department of Sociology of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1996-1997. Returning to the results of this research, the authors express confidence that the experience of studying and overcoming the social consequences of the Chernobyl disaster will not lose its universal value as long as humanity masters new technologies that allow solving global energy supply problems, but are inevitably associated with the risk of man-made disasters.
